The Victorian Mounted Police horse stables in Melbourne was being moved to a new location and the existing building of the horse stables was to be used by the University of Melbourne as a new campus for the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). The stables would be re-developed into the visual arts wing of the VCA that would create a new entry point to the University and opening the campus to students, local businesses and residents. As part of the redevelopment, Bas Van Muers from ADS Design was engaged to fabricate the glazing of an internal octagonal steel structure approximately 7.5 meters high. Bas attempted to do the measurements as he normally does, with a tape measure and handheld laser distance meter. In this case, he also had to use a scissor lift to access the points he needed. After almost 2 days of attempting to obtain the accurate measurements required, he realised that his measurements were just not good enough and did not contain the precision required for the job. He contacted Flexijet Australia to do the site measure for him using the Flexijet 3D laser measuring system.
Using Flexijet 3D, this job was completed in 2.5 hours. This of course not only included the measurement data but also a complete 3D CAD model with a precision of less than 1mm. Furthermore, all measurements were easily accomplished in safety from ground level… no scissor lifts, ladders or scaffolds are required!
